Have you ever heard of a clothing company called 21SCARS? Maybe you have, maybe you haven't, but 21SCARS is an up-and-coming clothing company that specialises in providing apparel for people that kitesurf and take part in extreme sports. Recently I met up with the company director of 21SCARS and learnt a lot about the company, and at the same time I learned a lot about life, too.

As with many companies starting up there is often a story behind it. There are also often delays between the initial idea that leads to the founding of the company and the official launch. 21SCARS is such a company, but with a difference. The initial ideas were born on the other side of the world while the founder was on an important journey. Having graduated with a first class honours degree in design he went to work for a big corporate film company in London. After a period of time working in this business it was soon clear that being cooped up in a dark room hiding behind computer screens wasn't the way to spend his life. It wasn't until family circumstances forced him to reassess his values and working patterns that he decided to leave the corporate system and venture out to find a new path in life.

Setting off on a journey around the world to explore different ways of life he came across a number of different obstacles that all left their mark in one way or another, with many scarring him physically. He's certainly got some impressive scars: shielding an open-water student from a titan trigger fish attack while working as a divemaster on Koh Tao, Thailand; being torn across a shipwreck while training as an IKO instructor in Mexico; and a 2-stroke crash on the dusty roads of Asia, have all left their signature. The night that he came up with the idea of 21SCARS he was on his way home, and having a reflective night in. He realised that all his experiences had left their mark by permanently changing his body - he had picked up a total of 21 scars. His journey around the world has certainly left him with some incredible memories and experiences that he feels are best shared through the creation of the company 21SCARS.

Having taken a look in detail at the launch collection and after hearing some of the company's future plans, I believe that we are looking at the next big success, following in the footsteps of renowned companies such as O'Neill or Quiksilver! Although 21SCARS looks small at the moment there's no doubt that with the future plans they will become a leading name in the extreme sports scene. One thing I really like about 21SCARS is the fact that the products aren't necessarily kiteboarding specific - already some of my friends are wearing the t-shirts, even though they may not be kitesurfers! The range of designs varies so that kiteboarders can 'wear' their sport and other people can just wear an extremely cool looking shirt. If you take a look at the launch collection you can see that there is a t-shirt for everyone. Whether you like to be loud and bold or quiet and subtle, there is something for you. These are definitely shirts that I will be wearing in the future! Another important point for me is that every product is produced as ethically and environmentally compliant as possible.

Overall I was really impressed with what I saw and heard about 21SCARS. It seems like a great company with huge potential. Talking with Daniel was an eye-opening experience for me, he is a truly inspirational person. Being at a critical stage of my life, where I have to make decisions that are going to affect me later on, I think I definitely have a different outlook as a result of our meeting.

New Shinn board: The Super Shinn 2012

It was about time we heard news on a new Shinn board!

It's called the Supershinn...


... and its the replacement for the Player, which was the contest freestyle board that had, unsurprisingly, limited success outside the team rider's ambition of scoring points in the contest arena. This new board part uses Monk technology, together with some pretty cool new tip channeling and a refined outline to bring near Monk levels of control and realworld performance to a board that is capable of incredible pop. It's undoubtably ahead of the old player in terms of expert freestyle (pop and landing ability), and with the current windrange, comfort and carving ability of the latest shinn shapes, it's destined to be a big hit with the mainstream.

I also think it's probably the best looking board he has made so far..

This board will not replace the Monk in terms of freeride capability, but if anyone is thinking of unhooking, then the Supershinn will do for their freestyle what the Monk did for their freeride!

Xenon Rayo Kiteboard Kiteworld Review

THE HYPE:
The Rayo 2011 is an all-round twin-tip with great freestyle potential that will propel you to the next level. Offering all the features you'll need, it provides a great upwind ability and mellow ride in most water and wind conditions, thanks to a balanced combination of variable flex, generous rocker-line and fuller outline. Compared to the 2010 model, this year's Rayo is a bit stiffer and more aggressive with an extra wide stance option on the 134 and 138 for new school freestyle. Each board comes with completely redesigned moulded EVA pads with bi-directional pattern. Designed for novice to advanced riders.

TEST TEAM NOTES:
We've been impressed with Xenon's boards since first trying them last year. They have their own feel and look. This Rayo looks very friendly, doesn't it? Almost like it wants to give you a big hug. Well, it's certainly a very cosy, comfortable ride, but not lazy in any way. The soft, shiny foot pads and straps are comfortable, grippy and easy to get tight, like a pair of Velcro trainers. The outline has freestyle attitude, being nice and wide in the tips and wouldn't look strange with a set of bindings on it. But equally it's not exclusively a dark arts board. The Rayo carries good speed and is immediately reactive giving you a good connection and feels full of energy. All the Xenon boards we've tried are good in chop, but mix in some lovely freestyle performance as well. Soft in the nose and tail, the board is quite broad and stiffer in the middle, riding like you're on a big bubble, softening everything out. The Rayo puts you in your happy place straight away and has a lovely involving feel off your back foot with a midrange, but comfortable flex.

SUMMARY:
On the softer side of stiff, this is a real allrounder. Everything about the Rayo is above average and we highly recommended for anyone looking for an easy-to-ride, fast, comfortable twin-tip with a nice mix of freeride carving, boosting and for progressing into some new school freestyle.

Real all-round performance.

Some of the fixtures and fittings aren't top of the range, but that doesn't affect your riding pleasure.

Riglet Summer Snowboarding Camps for Kids!

Due to the huge success of the Riglet parks in the US and France we have decided to give it a go here in the UK. Tamworth Snowdome will be offering 2 weeks of Riglet camps for 5 -8 years olds in August.

Brand new and exclusive to the SnowDome… this summer, we are proud to present the first ever Burton Riglet snowboard camps, providing a unique opportunity for children aged 5 to 8 years to learn to snowboard.

Complete with a specialised fleet of European Burton Riglet snowboard equipment, designed specifically for young children – youngsters from 5 to 8 years will be able to take their first steps into the world of snowboarding. Complete with a dedicated team of instructors, each camp will run for four days (Monday-Thursday) and will include 2 hours of instruction per day (either 9am-11am or 2pm-4pm).

With the main focus on fun through learning, children will be able to adopt the basics of snowboarding in an exciting and stimulating environment. The first day will involve a fun-park atmosphere focusing on balance and equipment awareness. As the days progress, children will be taken through a route of progression to include, basic turns and edge control… leading to the final end goal of the camp, riding the main slope.

Riglet snowboard camps cost ONLY £79 per child. Camps are available for children aged 5 to 8 years and will have a maximum of 10 children per camp. Camps run Monday – Thursday, at either 9am-11am or 2pm-4pm. Riglet camps are available on the following dates:

• Monday 8th to Thursday 11th August – 9am-11am OR 2pm-4pm
• Monday 15th to Thursday 18th August – 9am-11am OR 2pm-4pm
• Monday 22nd to Thursday 25th August – 9am-11am OR 2pm-4pm
